Production schedule for a one-hectare plot of kiwi

Production schedule for one hectare of Hayward/Tomuri kiwis grafted onto Bounty 71 in T-bar for the south of France

Potential Yield Year by Year

Year Potential Production Remarks
1-3 No significant production The first three years are dedicated to establishing the plant's structure, growth, and establishing the T-bar training system. Formative pruning and regular irrigation are required.
4 Start of production: approximately 5-10 tonnes/ha First harvest possible. Winter and summer pruning necessary to promote fruiting. Thinning recommended to improve size.
5-7 Gradual increase in yield Yield increases every year. Winter and summer pruning are essential. Compost in the fall and regular irrigation are necessary.
8+ Optimal production: 20 tonnes/ha on average (5 to 40 tonnes/ha) Optimal yield achieved from the 8th year. Compost in the fall, winter pruning to maintain 1.2 to 1.4 canes/m² of trees, thinning limited to 35 fruits/m² (45 fruits/m² for exceptional orchards).

Year 1: Planting and Installation

  • Period: Autumn or spring depending on the plant material chosen.
  • Planting density: 300 to 800 female plants/ha, with 1 male for 5 to 8 females (100 to 160 male plants/ha).
  • Spacing: 2.5 to 6 m in the row and 4 to 6 m between rows (5 m between rows for the T-bar).
  • Trellising: Installation of the T-bar system with 2 m high posts (above ground), spaced 3 to 5 m apart in the row.
  • Watering: Installation of a micro-sprinkler system under the canopy, with daily watering.
  • Soil preparation: Incorporate green manure (alfalfa, clover, phacelia) before planting.
  • Fertilization: Add manure and compost, along with a fast-acting fertilizer (horn or bone meal). 15 kg of mature compost per plant, incorporated into the top 20 cm of soil.

Years 2 to 3: Growth and Training

  • Size :
    • 1st year: Shorten the main stem to 30 cm from the ground.
    • 2nd year: Cut new shoots to 50 cm and guide them along a support.
    • 3rd year: Train the main branches, cut back to 50 cm, keeping 4 to 5 buds.
  • Fertilization: Compost in autumn (30 t/ha), fertilizer in spring before bud break and just before flowering.
  • Watering: 5L per week per plant from April to October in the absence of rain.
  • Production: No significant production.

Year 4: Start of Production

  • Production: First harvest possible, but low yields (5-10 t/ha).
  • Size :
    • Winter: December to February. Renewal of the laterals.
    • Summer: June to September. Improved light, ventilation, selection of future fruiting branches.
  • Thinning: Limit to 35 fruits/m² of trees to promote size.
  • Harvest: October-November before the first frosts.
  • Fertilization: Compost in the fall (30 t/ha).

Years 5 to 7: Increased Production

  • Production: Yields gradually increasing each year.
  • Pruning: Winter (February) and summer (June-July).
  • Thinning: Limit to 35 fruits/m² of trees.
  • Harvest: October-November, before the first frosts.
  • Fertilization: Compost in the fall (30 t/ha).

Year 8 and beyond: Optimal Production

  • Production: Average yield of 20 t/ha (possible variation between 5 and 40 t/ha).
  • Size: Maintain 1.2 to 1.4 canes/m² of trees.
  • Thinning: Maximum 35 fruits/m² (up to 45 fruits/m² for exceptional orchards).
  • Harvest: October-November, when the fruits reach a minimum of 6.5° Brix.
  • Fertilization: Compost in the fall (30 t/ha), split fertilizers in the spring.
  • Irrigation: 5L per week per plant from April to October in the absence of rain.
