General recommendations for planting and harvesting kiwifruit
Here are general recommendations for planting and harvesting kiwifruit, without considering specific varieties for the moment:
Planting
- Kiwis are best planted in autumn or spring.
- It is recommended to plant kiwis outside of periods of frost.
- For frank plants, it is essential to choose well-drained and rich soil.
Harvest
- The kiwifruit harvest period generally falls between mid-October and the end of November in France. This period can vary depending on the region, and can sometimes extend until the first frost.
- Kiwis should be harvested before the first frost.
- The fruits are ready to be harvested when the flesh crushes very slightly under finger pressure. They should be firm, but a little less hard than before. The skin can be green or brown depending on the variety.
- The fall of the first leaves is also a sign that the harvest period begins.
- Kiwis are picked by hand, over a period of about 3 weeks, at a harvest maturity that is not commercial maturity, as the kiwi continues to ripen after harvest.
- The harvest is carried out in several passes to pick only the fruit at optimal maturity.
- Kiwis are climacteric fruits, meaning they continue to ripen after harvest. A controlled ripening process allows their aromas to develop.
Other important points
- After harvesting, kiwis keep well in a cool place, at around 5°C, for several weeks, or even more than a month.
- Harvesting should be done in dry weather to minimize the risk of fungal diseases.
- French producers must respect a minimum sugar level for the harvest, with a value of 6.5° Brix (or more) for Adour kiwi.
In summary
Planting is best done in autumn or spring, and harvesting takes place mainly in autumn, usually between mid-October and the end of November. It is important to monitor for signs of maturity and adapt the harvest period according to local climatic conditions.
